Another Successful Genius Bar Visit

I love having an Apple Store in Boise, Idaho.  Unlike the local Mac Reseller, I am able to get issues resolved locally without having to have my iThing sent out to Apple.  Most recently my Wife’s iPod Touch had started to freeze up when playing a game of Angry Birds, viewing an email and playing songs.

I took the device into the local Apple Store.  They recommened I restore the device and see what happens.  After a week and after the restore the problem still persisited.  I took the device back into Apple and was promptly given a replacement at no cost.

AppleCare of course is a must for all devices and in this case saved the day.  No issues since the replacement.  The Genius Bar people were great.  I made a few jokes about the Red Apple shirts during the holidays and asked when the Verizon iPhone was coming (the visit was before the announcement).   I gave them a great review and after 5 experiences I can say they have resolved every issue and that is service you can’t get anywhere else.

ZumoCast, the Simplify Media Replacement

After about 5 months I have found a replacement for Simplify Media on my Mac.  It comes via an iOS application mentioned during Episode #298 of the Mac Geek Gab Episode.  As part of the Cool Stuff Found episode John and Dave mentioned ZumoCast as way to stream both Music and Video files the easy way.

As I listened I was sold and rushed home to install the app on the my iPhone 3GS and the OS X client.  The App does exactly what the website states it will.  It allows you to stream your Music and Movies via your iPhone, iPod, iPad and web browser.  Set up was quite easy.  You install the ZumoCast client on you Mac or PC, sign up for an account, then download the iOS app and you’re on your way to cloud based streaming of your music and movies.

The iPhone version allows for streaming over both Wifi and 3G. Oh, did I mention the as of this post the App is Free?  Yes the App is free on iTunes.

Subler: An iTunes Metadata Editing Utility

The Apple TV is more than just a hobby to me. When I purchased the device earlier this year I began converting my DVD library for use on the Apple TV.

As I began to import movies I found myself searching Google for poster artwork, as well manually selecting the movie genre. Unlike imported music, iTunes has a hard time importing movie art. Additionally, I wanted to include each movie’s description, but there wasn’t an easy way to find this information.

In the July 10th issue of MacLife I came across the Google utility Subler. Once downloaded simply drag the converted file onto the Subler icon. Alternatively, add Subler to the Application folder on OS X and open files from the menu bar.  Next click the search button and search for the movie. After deciding on the description and artwork click save.

The results of each search may vary depending on the movie. Once completed import the movie into iTunes and the saved information will appear once synced with your Apple TV, iPad, iPhone and iPod Touch device.
